Stuff...

Well, Cheyenne's blood test came back clean -- no clotting problems, which is a relief. The stupid cyst looks smaller one day, then bigger the next. It just needs to go away, as I'm hoping we don't have to take the surgery route. I just need a good break one of these days...

Played Successors this past Sunday at Greg Denyshenko's (sp?) house. One of the guys, Carl, was a bit of a hard-ass ("Can't take that move back" kind of guy), which took a little of the fun away. But it was fun overall, and Jeff Burdett won a Turn 2 victory via VPs, after taking Greece. Funny thing was, we all had a chance to win that turn -- the other 3 of us via Legitimacy, as Alexander's body was racing to Pella for burial, and getting battled over. Overall, a good time, though I'll know in the future to get it straight, up front, that in friendly games we don't act like hard-asses. It ain't a chess tourney. I really do like Successors, and am about to get in a pbem game of it. Mark Simonitch and John Firer did a good job in making this a fun game.

I picked up Clash of Monarchs and Pursuit of Glory in GMT's P500 Customer Appreciation Sale. I'm looking at the CoM rules, and I'm pretty sure the game isn't for me. Too damn fiddly and procedural. I'm hoping PuoG will be more for my tastes, even though the rulebook is way too long. Damn, people, what's with all this needless complexity we're getting into games today? Feh...

Time for me to really buckle down and actually design the kind of games I want. I have a nice little euro rattling around, and some real good ideas for a card-driven game, though I have no stomach for doing all the OOB research. I need a research assistant for that... One of these days...

In the sporting world, the Buffalo Sabres are still playing real good hockey. I love watching the Sabres, but I'm not an NHL fan (if the Sabres aren't playing, I don't watch the game). I think this is a big problem for the NHL (at least in the U.S.), as folks like to follow "their" teams, but don't really care about the rest of the league. It'll be interesting to see where this takes the NHL, down the road -- especially because it's getting so freakin' expensive to go to games. I'm going to the Buffalo/Toronto game on December 12th, and 2 tickets cost $300. Man...

70F forecast today, global warming is back, after disappearing this last year, LOL!

OOB research?

Let me know when you want to sell me COM cheap...

You could have found out about CoM by getting the rules from the web. I downloaded them about a month ago and still haven't gotten through them.

That's the downside of putting rules on the web. Sometimes, you pursuade people not to buy the game

I would say 50% of most rules are telling you the things you can’t do.
I guess protection from the Rules Lawyer’s.

It is nice out isn’t it. Too bad I have to leave tomorrow. Today would have been a good day for standing on a stream, fly casting to some Steelhead. Who would have guessed?

Have you gone out this morning to vote yet or are you going to wait until this evening?

That could be cool. Might be a nice thing to get into.

That is great news about Cheyenne Rob - glad it turned out for the better .

I have a game of Clash of Monarchs going....it's not as complex as I had feared when reading the rules, but it IS a long game . If you play the whole campaign, probably the longest CDG out there I bet .

I am looking forward to Spartacus and Unhappy King Chucky, as both are on the simpler side of CDG from what I can see.

What period are you thinking about for a CDG Rob?

I was serious on the GMT forum. A good "generic" CDG is needed.

I still hope to give Clash a shot, though I'm not optimistic...

I don't think a "generic" CDG would be to my liking -- I really don't like games such as Risk, Soldier Kings, Blocks of Victory, etc.

I'm thinking of "generic" in terms of "not historical". Perhaps speculative would be a better term.

There are a bunch of reasons why I'd like to find something like this.

1) I think the most interesting historical periods have been done.

2) I find that an awful lot of the CDG's fail "historical accuracy" for me in one way or another. I like PoG and FtP. They are good games, but are not good representations of the actual wars they represent. Even WW has this to some extent. Removing the historical background would help eliminate these problems for me.

3) I think that a more balanced setup would be possible with a mostly made up situation.

4) Done properly, such a game could be built as a framework, upon which new games could be relatively easily added. Define the way that the common core system works, and then adapt it for different periods and settings. It is *very* annoying that the CDG's share similar mechanics, but implement them in subtly different ways.

NHL games are ridiculous, but that's cheap! I went to a Maple Leafs' exhibition game last year: sitting about halfway up behind the goals for an exhibition game, the tickets had a price of $176 each!!! Fortunately they were given to me......

Sadly I have some ideas for a French Revolution CDG, but no time to do anything with them.... :(

Time to retire!

I still think there are a ton of conflicts just crying out to be given the CDG treatment...

ACW by Theater (Eastern, Western, Trans-Mississippi)
WWII Sicily/Italian Campaign
Latin American Wars for Independence
War of 1812 (yes, I believe this!)
Vietnam
King Phillip's War
Mayan Civil Wars (here one could have a lot of leeway with the history, since so much has been lost)
Romans in Gaul, Brittania, and Germania
American Revolution (more detailed than We the People)
WWII Burmese Campaign
Hypothetical WWIII (a lot of leeway available here)
1919/20 Russo-Polish War
Tet Offensive
7 Years War Worldwide
Napoleonic Wars Worldwide
Chinese Civil War
Korean War

Enough for now ;-)

The French Revolution would be a fascinating subject -- let's hope RObin gets time one of these years...
